Scope
The 2011 Joint Conference of CBI-Society and JSBi
The CBI (Chem-Bio Informatics) Society and the Japanese Society of Bioinformatics (JSBi) will jointly organize the 2011 Joint Conference of CBI-Society and JSBi at the Kobe International Conference Center, Kobe, Japan from November 8 to November 10, 2011. It is the first conference jointly organized by the CBI Society and JSBi. The main aim of this joint conference is to promote collaborations between members in the CBI Society and those in JSBi. It is also the first CBI annual meeting that is held in Kansai area, and the conference venue is close to RIKEN Next-Generation Supercomputer R&D Center where the next generation supercomputer system will be fully operated from 2012. Based on these, we plan to organize the conference program to include drug design and its application to medicine that make extensive use of super computers and advanced information technology as a main topic, as well as other topics covered by previous CBI and JSBi meetings. This conference also aims to explore new research areas that will contribute to development of both societies. We sincerely hope that this conference provides researchers in various fields that include computational science, information science, medical science and drug design with opportunities for development of new trends in science and technology.
The CBI Society is aiming at building an information and computational infrastructure for advanced research and development over those research fields associated with chemistry, biology and informatics. The CBI Society has provided pharmaceutical, medical and computational researchers with opportunities of lectures, seminars and symposia on novel methodologies concerning computational chemistry, molecular biology and bioinformatics, facilitating the formation of interdisciplinary communities worldwide. The research fields that the CBI Society is interested in are the bases for a wide area of disciplines such as pharmacology, toxicology, medicine, health science, agricultural science and environmental science, and cover industrial interests associated with biotechnology, information technology and nanotechnology as well. In the CBI Annual Meetings established in 2000, a lot of invited lectures, oral talks and poster presentations have been given on these areas.
JSBi was founded in 1999 for promoting researches and educational activities on bioinformatics as well as for promoting the relevant technologies and industries in Japan. The most important event of the Society is the Annual Conference, which is held once a year to provide opportunities for presentation of the works by members and promote exchange of their ideas. The official language of the meeting is English. Important activities of JSBi are the activity of Special Interest Groups (SIGs) and that of (regional) Working Groups, publication of newsletters which are delivered to the members twice per year, organization of summer school for students and young researchers, and cooperation with international societies. Other activities include the proposal of a standard curriculum for bioinformatics education in universities and graduate schools and the editing of an encyclopedia of bioinformatics (in Japanese). The encyclopedia, written by hundreds of JSBi members and researchers in related areas, was published by Kyoritsu Shuppan. Co. Ltd. in 2006. Since 2007, JSBi has been the main organizer of the certification examination for bioinformatics engineers, which is also supported by the CBI Society.
